you for your "Away with Words" series on Discovery. I fluently speak English

love the mistery of words and their origins! Best regards. Calin RANG.

Jeeze,
i just bought me the Rutles DVD, which i recommend because, in addition to what you get on the video, you can also enjoy Eric Idle's comments throughout the movie (i never would have thought that the actress who brilliantly played the woman going on about the tight trousers was the same one who played the Nazi-Yoko woman!). anyway, that's why i felt i had to look around on the internet for stuff related to the Rutles, and so i found this fantastic site.
thanks a lot, especially for all the lyrics and stuff!
take care
Bernie
PS I have a hunch Holden Caulfield (aka the Catcher in the Rye, to whom my website
is dedicated) might have loved the Rutles...

I can't think of one individual who has enriched my life more than Mr.Innes, albeit in some shadowy form or another.
If Neil Innes ever reads this, I'd just like to say that the Rutles music stands
alongside anything Lennon & McCartney ever wrote, perhaps his particular genius
lies in the ability to mimic a style, look back to it's origins and have a bloody
good laugh along the way. Thanks a lot, Neil, you are the BEST !!!!!

I would like to give Neil a big virtual hug (since I've never gotten close enough for a real one...). What music I have of Neil's has always been tops in my collection (and when the Bonzo CD's were released - and I could get them - I had waited 10 years to hear "Keynsham"!). I'm still trying to find sources for Neil's stuff in my neck of the woods...I'll keep trying.
Thank you, Neil - for all of it.

Just to say that I enjoyed the site. Thanks a lot.
Bonzos helped me through my teans. My musical sense of humour. I used to go into a cool pub (age 18) with lots of beautiful people and put on 'Canyons of your Mind' on the juke box. It changed the atmosphere!
Loved Rutles. Got the records. Archeology is inspired but I am a heavy-duty beatles fan so I get more from it than most I like to think.
Saw Neil recently at Bush house with E. Bron, Graham G etc recording radio. Did a super solo piece. Had the pen and copy of Archeology ready in case Neil was free but he dashed. Ms Bron got on her bike outside and rode off.
Bought the Bonzos trilogy recently in Broadstairs. Quite a catch. Historically very interesting. Didnt know McCartney produced 'spaceman'.
Good wishes to the webmaster and look forward to more inventive stuff from Neil.
regards
Mike

Also watched interview in Imperial Ballroom. Why the straw hat? You look good

Also if "Rutling" is to be in the dictionary as "to copy the style of another
music group", maybe Webster should make room for it by eliminating "Curling"
all together. Hey, you're a genius by the way.

If any of the Lennon family's talents or actual value need scrutiny,it would be the validity of Sean Lennon. Want to know the major reason for John and Yoko's
split. John has a New York born illigitmate daughter. That's why he moved to
New York City in the 70's. Also why he had a lot of depression. This was a private
battle with a married woman. The married woman wanted to keep it hidden from
her daughter. The daughter found out at 24 years of age. By then John was already
dead. John was planning to see her by the time she reached 18 years old. John's
frustration on contacting his daughter intensified in the 70's. As a result
the daughter's step-father almost killed the mother. Now the daughter is in
the music business writing music and keeping her secret. Meanwhile I am a A&R
guy over at Sony. The gossip is all through the music business. I can't reveal
my full real name because I am sworn to secrecy. I have seen her and she is
a beautiful blonde woman. I can't even tell her I know because I could get in
trouble with the music business. I just felt I had to tell someone. John went
crazy to see his child that was denied him because of the married mother.

Hey wow, I've just come from the Palmerston North gig (New Zealand). Folks,if theres anyone reading this in New Zealand, get out there and see at least one of Neil's remaining gigs, they are MORE THAN WORTH IT!!!! This man is so talented, and you will have such a great time, you will both laugh, and be made to think a little more deeply too. No matter how many times I see him perform, I will NEVER tire of it, and I will always enjoy it! This man is exceptionally talented! Hey,trust me,would I have come all the way from Australia just to see his concerts? Off all the music I've ever listened to, this man is genuinely the most all-round talented. He has an incredible gift for songwriting, and if you go, I promise you that you will be touched in some way by what he does.
So follow the links on this page of neilinnes.org to the tour dates, and get out there and see him! It's not every day that such an exceptionally talented man is in your country!
There's also another date that might not be up on the page yet- the Kings Arms Tavern in Auckland on the 6th of March - so you still have two opportunities to see him!
Take it from me - you won't regret it! This man's music, thoughts and humour will touch you!
Thanks Neil, for such enjoyable music. You have a real gift.

Did anyone catch the feature Mojo Magazine did a while back on 'Patto' (John 'Barry Wom' Halsey's old band)?
There were interviews with John and Neil and loads of information on the late,

members of Patto, who had the same, wonderfully surreal attitude as the Bonzo

To Kev (see message below) - no, I don't think your expedition to Keynsham was sad! I also made a point of driving through Keynsham when holidaying in the UK last year (the burning pile of tyres in a field next to the road as you came into the place was quite spectacular, and really set the tone!).
What is more sad was my trip from Oban to the Mull of Kintyre (all because I like Macca's music too, and wanted to also visit the place of the song) then back to Oban because I forgot something, then all the way down to Cardiff - all in the same day!! (even sillier, when you consider our ultimate destination the next day was somewhere "oop north". (And let's not even mention Krome Hill).

It was - to add to the e-mails piling up on your welcome mat - a real pleasure to see/hear you in New York at The Village Underground. And to hear anything performed live that was off the Keynsham album was a walk down memory lane from back when I was an eager lad of fifteen dating Polly Donnison (child author of "William and the Dragon") having no idea what to do with a girl. Instead listening to LPs like "Gorilla" and "Keynsham."
Not to mention growing up watching "Do Not Adjust Your Set." Halcyon days revisited on Tuesday night.
And the pleasure of enjoying so much between then and now including Grimms and Rutland Weekend Television.
Liking the new stuff too - and looking forward to introducing my two year old son to it all. (Finally found out what to do with girls.)
Love to you and yours and thanks for the songs and their singing.

I saw your show last night at the Village Underground and I wanted to say how great it was to have you in town. My brother, sister and I all grew up listening to your music and it, along with the Beatles, got all of us into playing our own music, which is such a cornerstone of ouyr adult lives.
Anway, seeing you the other night was (a) a really great, totally unexpected suprise and (b) served to really connect all of us back to really wonderful halcyon days. There was really something life-affirming about it, and I think we're all ready for as much of that as we can get these days, so anyway thanks much. It meant alot!

Thanks so much for this. In the U.S., it's very hard to get a hold of Neil's stuff. Not anymore! We had the pleasure of seeing him at HOB in Cambridge and the added thrill of meeting him after the show. There was a guy before us who had every album Neil ever released, and Neil patiently signed them all. What a guy! THese songs invade your brain and will not leave until you listen to them over and over and over happily. We felt like we were in "Shangri-La" Sunday night, to be able to see Neil Innes live. We fell in love listening to the Rutles, like many others must have, and we're just so so SO grateful to you for providing us and so many others the opportunity to hear the songs of this flippin' genius. Hi!
I am interested in using your lyrics to Knights of the Round Table for a high
school drama anthology I am working on. The students are to read the play Sir
Gawain and the Green Knight and discuss the play as well as do some interpretive
things involving the script. Additionally, we have them look at/think about
a piece of writing on a related theme. I believe students would have fun reading
Knights of the Round Table and interpreting it in their own way. Would you be
willing to grant permission for its use? Please supply any info you gave me
as well as the cost of using your song. Thanks so much. Gay Russell-Dempsey

Boston Globe review of Neil in Cambridge, MA
MUSIC REVIEW
Innes's humor doesn't compromise his rock
By Jim Sullivan, Globe Staff, 10/9/2001
CAMBRIDGE - Neil Innes, a bald man sporting a gray, Beatles-like wig, took the stage at the House of Blues Sunday night. The members of the ace alt-rock band Yo La Tengo - guitarist Ira Kaplan, bassist James McNew, and drummer Georgia Hubley - huddled as a group to his left, playing pennywhistles and kazoos. Innes, playing acoustic guitar, kicked off a joyous little ditty called ''I'm an Urban Spaceman,'' a song he called ''a medley of hit,'' noting, ''that concludes the showbiz segment.'' To back up a bit: That ''hit'' was written by Innes and performed by his old group the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band (sometimes shortened to Bonzo Dog Band) in 1968 and it charted in England at No. 5.
Since then, his work has been absent the top of the charts anywhere. But Innes's charm lies not in his hit-making, but in his songcraft - both his parodies of others (from the Beatles to Elton John) and in his more heartfelt guise. He has recorded as a solo artist, was the mainstay of the Beatle's parody band the Rutles, and wrote the music for Monty Python.
Sunday, he treated a capacity crowd to 90 minutes of music from his vast catalog, with the enthusiastic backing of Yo La Tengo (who, yes, played their regular instruments after the first song). There was good old-fashioned rockin' in ''Goose Step Mama,'' McCartney-esque schmaltz in ''Between Us,'' a Kinks-ian touch in ''Never Alone,'' with Innes singing, ''We're all in the gutter, we may as well gaze at the stars.''
He dug from the Bonzos catalog, served up a healthy dose of Rutles, and played solo material, both new and old. For ''Stoned on Rock,'' Innes embraced the lyrical lowest common denominator to express the theme: Rock is good. He was funny, and the song was true.
Mixing music and comedy is no easy trick, and so many who try do it poorly. (Say hi, ''Weird'' Al. Take a bow, Capitol Steps.) Innes shuffles the two and blurs the lines. ''I've suffered for my art; now it's your turn,'' he proclaimed. At times, Innes sported a clown nose. During a solo segment, he donned a cowboy hat for the country parody ''Crystal Balls'' - opening line ''I've got my hand up the skirt of Mother Nature.'' He laid waste to the lyrical banality of Bernie Taupin in ''Godfrey Daniel.'' He adopted a faux French accent and renamed himself John-Paul Satire for the existential ''Love Is,'' which featured a ''hee-haw'' chorus (audience invited to join). He invoked Bob Dylan in ''Protest,'' replete with off-key harmonica. He presented himself as a charming dunce in ''How Sweet to be an Idiot.''
Innes began a solo Rutles medley and was joined by Yo La Tengo for the final song, ''Cheese and Onions.'' Later came ''Ouch!'' and ''I Must Be in Love.'' (These Rutles songs are really good, on their own and as parodies. Genius stuff.) Yo La Tengo, which played none of their material, served as a perfect complementary backup band. (Could they be Innes's own Wings?) Guitarist Kaplan, who loves both melody and wailing skronk, went out on a limb only twice during the final song of the regular set, ''Mr. Apollo,'' and the encore of ''Joe Public.'' In the latter, Kaplan fed the feedback god and in the latter, Innes sang ''I put my faith in the powers that be/Joe Public, that's me.'' A splendid time was had by all.

Boston Herald review of Neil in Cambridge, MA
A Rutle plays a maniacal mystery tour with Yo La Tengo
by Brett Milano
Tuesday, October 9, 2001
Neil Innes with Yo La Tengo at the House of Blues, Sunday night.
You don't often see a real, live Beatle at one of the local clubs. But Sunday night, the House of Blues had something nearly as good: a real, live Rutle.
Neil Innes is best known to U.S. audiences as the musical mastermind of the Rutles, the 1978 cult-classic satire cooked up by Monty Python's Eric Idle.
His career has intersected a few times with both the Beatles and the Pythons: His '60s group, the wild and surreal Bonzo Dog Band, was admired by the Beatles and appeared in the ``Magical Mystery Tour'' film. Innes later toured with the Pythons and played the obnoxious minstrel in ``Monty Python & the Holy Grail.'' He also can take credit for the oft-quoted line, ``I've suffered for my music; now it's your turn.''
One cult hero deserves another, and Sunday's show - his first local appearance in three decades - found him backed by the Hoboken trio Yo La Tengo. And it proved to be a match made in semi-obscure pop heaven. The Tengo members mainly played respectful backup, but got some of their own personality in the mix.
Guitarist Ira Kaplan played one of his trademark, ripping solos on Bonzo's ``Humanoid Boogie,'' and he and drummer Georgia Hubley harmonized on another, ``Readymades.'' They even played kazoos on the opener, ``I'm the Urban Spaceman,'' after which Innes revealed the bald head under his Beatle wig.
He proved a gifted parodist, with jabs at Elton John and protest-era Bob Dylan, but it wasn't just a night of laughs. A pair of new songs were surprisingly poignant: ``Facemail in the Meat Zone'' (a British cyberslang title) looked at loneliness in the Internet era, and was likely the first pop song ever to rhyme ``economy'' with ``Book of Deuteronomy.''
Full-blown Rutlemania took over at the end of the set, as the band served up ``Ouch!'' (think of ``Help!'' with a funnier chorus) and ``I Think I'm in Love,'' which sounded giddy enough to be a real Beatles song. On record, ``Joe Public'' approached the psychedelic sound of the later Fab Four; with Yo La Tengo's help it went all the way.

Notes:
Friday night, Neil appeared on WFMU Radio with a great live interview, and sang 2 songs (Song In A French Accent, Evening Sun)
On bus trip in, I finally see the WTC missing (my first time into NYC since...), very spooky.
Port Authority nearly empty
windy gusts, walking all the way around Madison Square Garden.
meeting Neil on a walk down the block (accidentally on purpose bumping into him!) EXCEPTIONALLY NICE MAN!
subjects briefly discussed: Martin Lewis, Colliding Circles, Pink Litmus Paper Shirt, more Beatles Out-Fakes, Beatlefests, 9/11, children's Book of the Month Clubs he's been doing projects for, Bob Moore, Jerry Lee Lewis, his recent trip to Nashville (!) to record, Eric Idle, Neil's and my websites, his new songwriting, him loving gigging with YLT, his first time performing in US since 1986, etc etc...
(new photos to come this week)
-- The Show --

(Neil sneaks onstage, acoustic solo, silver beatlewig)
I'm The Urban Spaceman
("that was a medley of my greatest hit... and so that ends the commercial segment of our show"... abruptly flings off wig, showing bald head... big cheers.)
(brings on backing band, Yo La Tengo)
Goose-Step Mama
(several quick Rutles medleys)
(solo kurzweil keyboard, amazing authentic Beatles piano sound)
Double Back Alley, Another Day, etc.
("silver surfer," middle-aged cyber jokes) Face Mail in the Meat Zone (new tune)
Mr. Eurovsion
Quiet Talks & Summer Walks
Between Us
(different hats)
Godfrey Daniel (Elton/Bernie Taupin parody)
Shangri-La
(scattered Bonzos songs, lotsa funny chat)
Humanoid Boogie
I Want To Be With You (for wife Yvonne, who was back in UK)
(many audience participation numbers,
new songs)
Stoned On Rock
Evening Sun (japanese lute-like guitar)
Cheese And Onions
Crystal Balls (banjo country segment, white cowboy hat)
Mr. Apollo
Yo La Tengo sings Piggy Bank Love
I Must Be In Love
Let's Be Natural (Ira Kaplan's haunting guitar textures)

Saw Neil Innes tonite at the House of Blues, Cambridge,
MA. One of only 3 dates in the US. Got there just before show was to begin and
found that it was sold out!! I thought Neil only had a cult following and it
was a Sunday night (though the nite before a Monday holiday).
Well, the bouncer told me there was a bar and the show would be shown on TV
monitors there. So I ordered a couple beers and watched and heard it there.
Not as good as being in the actual club (one floor up) but it'll
do. A good show with Yo La Tengo backing him up.
Neil played both solo and with YLT; Rutles songs included a medley ("Doubleback
Alley/Cheese and
Onions, etc."), "I Must Be in Love", "Ouch", "Shangrila",
"Joe Public", "Between Us" and "goose step mama".
Bonzo tunes included "I'm the Urban Spaceman",
"Mr. Apollo" (GREAT version!), "readymades",
"Piggy Bank Love", "I Want to Be With You",
and "Humanoid Boogie". He also did the "Protest
Song" that popped up on a couple Monty Python live albums.

Stumbled across a magazine interview with Neil announcing
his gigs in NYC this week!! Rescheduling everything to attend. Graduated from
Merely Insane to Wildly Rabid fan upon meeting Neil at NY Beatlefest back in
'97 or '98 (memory's fading). Overjoyed to FINALLY have the complete lyrics
(and title) to "Song In A French Accent" which he sang at Beatlefest. My crappy
audio tape recorded that day has long since worn out... so I'm off to grab the
Recollections CDs. Neil is precisely the goopy salve New York needs right now!!
Cheers!

It's incredible that Neil finished the first Rutles album so fast and with little
budget - I'm still discovering - and hugely enjoying - the little touches. French

I think it's cool that "Triangle Tango",is finally
getting some mention. The only problem is,it was never a Ron Nasty song. ( Yes,he
is heard singing it in "Let It Rot", but the fact of the matter is,it was always
a Stig O'Hara song.) It was released post-Rutles,with slightly altered lyrics,on
Stig's solo album "Gone To Aunt Artica". Hope this clears up some mysteries.
I can only hope these other missing songs eventually see the light of day.

Just a hello! I quite enjoy this site! I was at
Chicago Beatlefest 2001,where I learned about your exsistance.
I am also curious if anybody can tell me about a song Neil sang a little bit
of,titled "Hillary In The Killery"? He said it was inspired by a book he'd read, and
was an unused Rutles song. Hard to say, since he only sang a little bit of it,at
his signing table, when I asked if there was any unrealeased Rutles. He jokingly
said they did a cover of "I've Got You Under My Skin ",as well. Yeah, right!
Keep up the good work Neil, and keep us informed "Words Of Innespiration"!!

Regarding "Martian's" comments below about a Rutles
hoax....the hoax is in HIM claiming to have invented the hoax! I HAVE HEARD
the recordings in question! They are rough recordings, but definitely an important
part of the Rutles' music career that should be heard! As a producer of a radio
show many years ago, a recording of these was once handed to me to hear from
a record producer, amongst other Rutles music. I was a dedicated fan, and was
astounded, although I unfortunately couldn't get a copy. One of the songs, I
can't remember which, is sung by Barry Wom, but the others are Ron Nasty at
his best and nastiest! I live for the day when those recordings are discovered!
"Triangle Tango" is Ron Nasty at his cynical best! Don't believe the false claim
of a hoax...this is REAL! (Perhaps this false "hoax" is an attempt at a cover-up???
Or perhaps "Martian" is just wanting to take credit for something he didn't...and
COULDN'T possibly have done!)
Believe it...those songs are out there, and I hope one day that these Rutles
gems are heard again!

I recently met Neil at Beatlefest, and he signed my pretty red guitar, and I was happy, and...well my point is, I want to acquire as much Bonzo material as I can, and so far Best Buy, Ebay, Tower Records, BMG, Hastings, Wal-Mart, etc. etc. prove fruitless. just got on internet first time today. Saw Neil at Leadmill sheffield with Yo la tengo, expected him doing a support act in his own right but he was playing with YLT, only doing 2 songs on his own. However YLT who i'd never heard of till this point were great and certainly diferent. Well done Neil, not what was expected but brilliant anyway. I also saw you live a few years or so earlier at the Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield.Book of records/python songs/rutles etc etc all brilliant.
Neil's "Eurovision song contest man" is better than any of the so called serious entries. People do want to see you mate, even after all these years. Keep live gigs going however you can. Try selective support acts, "the audience is out here"! bye for now. Keith Brown.

I would like to say that when we were just little sprouts, my brother used to call innertubes "innes boops". I know this means something. Please feel free to interpret it on your own. And, I have not seen Neil Innes in concert, only on T.V. I am deprived but not entirely depraved and like this wealth of information, so I can see now all that I have missed. Congratulations to everyone and Tony Blair. Cheers, R. Sleeve

I was lucky enough to see The Bonzos at the Tiger's Head in Catford all those years ago. Twice a week they packed the place and we always got there about an hour before opening time to get seats at the front. Sometimes abit dodgy, especially when Legs Larry whacked your table with his walking stick whilst doing his amazing tap dance. Neil was even then the musical inspiration, perhaps the band were sometimes not very musical, but really great fun. There must be space on satellite TV for a rerun of Innes Book of Records.

Dear Neil,
You are so unstoppable! Go man go! It is so great that your marvelous site can fill-in a guy like me, who was born in 1963 Detroit, with everything you've been up to! (much of the recent stuff SO new because I'm here in the US and rely on a site like this to keep me up to date). I'd heard 'Doughnut...' when i was 13 in 1977 and you been with me ever since. I've only known the Bonzos, Pythons, and Rutles so, finding out about IBoR etc. to present was a blast. I make my living as a composer now (really!) and was in lack of inspiration last night. I checked out the site and was SO re-inspired. Thanks!
My parents got divorced when I was young and, as it turned out, in my teens, my Dad was living 40 miles south of my Mom's house (where i lived) and this meant that i could receive the Ohio PBS staions that had 'RWT' in their programming when I visited him on weekends. Not so on the Detroit stations. The reception really sucked but I sat through it on those weekends anyway and was really the 'odd sport' (even amongst my Python and retro-Goon friends) becuase i was the only one who had seen it! (and I mean, the reception was POOR, like seeing it through a snowstorm. My optomitrist (oculist) still thanks you!).
The tune to "L'Amour Perdue' stuck with me all these years (I even remember the episode where you sing it in drag - how odd the see the AVI after all these years and compare it with the memory). I never knew what its name was until I visted your site last night, let alone the lyrics. Ironically, after having a Swiss French-speaking wife of 8 years, the lyrics pretty much sum up the working knowledge of that Gallic tongue that I've been working with. I played and sang it for her at the piano - she is STILL scratching her head God bless 'er.
Once again: Go man go! I hope that (and will try and help to get) "Away with Words" shown here (now NYC) if I can.
Looking forward to all your newest stuff!
Thanks Neil,
Patrick Grant

I'd always sung 'Climb Every Mountain' in the election sketch but that shows you what growing up with only a copy of Live At Drury Lane for company will do for you. (Well it was either that or Eric Clapton live, and I only had one record token). Play 'He had a gun' next time eh?

Without doubt, a brilliant artist. Since the mid sixties I have followed him assidiously; Bonzo Dog. The World; Grimms: Neil Innes & Fatso and any/all solo material and have seen him whenever I could and have all the recorded material I could get. as a parodist there is no equal in my eyes; to make me laugh whilst enjoying good rock music ('Bandwagon' et al) is a gift very few people have. The 'bonhomie' at his gigs is genuine.
Re:QEH in December 2000. I was there with my son; a TOTAL fan, only 18, but TOTAL FAN. The sound in the first half was appalling. I remonstarted with the soundman at the interval; he shrugged and said ' it was the Hall; not made for this sort of music!'
B**l***s, quoth I; the hall was built for acoustic perfection and you are not doing your job! Do something about it or I shall stand up and say something (using the perfect Acoustics!).
The second half was much better; not perfect, but better balanced.
Neil Innes is fantastic. I, and my son, shall continue to follow him as long as he chooses to perform. At the age of 55, I shall continue to be an autograph hunting fan because he is worth it!

this comment directed at legless bags below, i wish to report a sighting of bruce. upon sewing up worms' mouths (they do moan on so you see..) in the market square last night, i stumbled upon a thing of much blueness. it looked kind of soft so i thought i would say hello, but as i prepared my voice for the introductory speech, it began to growl. nevertheless, i continued with the harmonious throat clearing, only to find that this colourful vision was in fact a stray leg - content only to stab my half-eaten tuna sandwich to death with a blunt stalk of asparugus. i'll thank you to keep your leg on it's leash in future 'bags', as my sandwich is most distraught and has been quivering under a blanket since the incident (i fear that i will never see the little fishy glint in his eye again).... poor old tuny may have been killed if it wasn't for the woman who came to attack bruce for running off with her husband (mr. asparagus). bruce was startled, and so ran off- but he is still out there, and dangerous.... i beg you to recapture him.

Just like to let you know that I met Mr Innes on 23rd December at a well known retail outlet in Martlesham where I work. I have met him here before in the summer but bottled out before asking for his autograph, anyhow this time I was able to summon up the courage to ask and Mr Innes graciously signed " To Jason Merry Christmas 2000 & very best wishes, Neil Innes ". It's strange (or is it) that so many people of my own age (31) or younger have no idea whom Neil Innes is, when I relayed my good fortune to my colleagues I was met with a chorus of "who's Neil Innes ???"
Anyhow,
Cheers Mr Innes, Happy New Year, hope to see you instore again and no..I don't rate Oasis but what do you think of Tom Waits or Ian Dury?

Hello...I can safely say there were no complaints with Sound at the Norwich gig, and the Arts Centre is reknowned for it's lame technicians! Quite how their legs impair their performance I don't know, but it does! *bad joke, apology*. Re: The 'Rutles'?? show at QEH on Monday 11th Dec. I'm sorry to say that the only word to describe it is 'poor'. The sound in the first half was atrocious - whoever was mixing the show needs his ears washing out - and the amount of fluffed intros and bum notes was embarrasing. I found myself extremely nervous during the whole gig, wondering when the next mistake was coming, and felt uncomfortable throughout.
Having supported Neil at the recent Ronnie Scott's gig, I regret that I feel cheated by the QEH experience, and wonder if I will make the effort both in time and money to attend any future proposed 'Rutle' shows.
I hope Neil reads this - and next time trust the fact that performing solo can be as pleasurable for the audience as a full band, particularly when the band are under rehearsed. (nb. this fact aside does still not account for the abysmal sound). The QEH were happy to accept the full price for my ticket and yet I received a cut-price performance.
Perhaps Neil, you can find answers to why the sound was so bad, and also tell me why you thought it necessary to perform an ill-prepared show while the QEH take our money?
Perhaps you should have had it out with the QEH - who no doubt win hands down as the concert was a sell-out?
A disappointed fan.

December 15, 2000
Neil Innes here
OW! So Steve was unhappy with the band and the sound and only stayed 30 minutes? I'm really sorry but we did the best we could in the time. It was supposed to be a solo concert. 3 weeks before the show it was advertised as a Rutle evening. What was I supposed to do? In the end, because John Halsey said he could do it, I reluctantly agreed. I gave every penny to the band for 2 days rehearsal and the show itself. The special guests, like me, did it for free. Sure it was rough here and there but I enjoyed it and so did most folks. Halsey's paper tearing solo was a triumph! So heigh ho, Happy Holidays everyone - and thanks for all your comments and support - and yes Paul, there should be a Bonzo - Rutle - Neil thing with a band soon, all properly rehearsed of course! See ya next year...

Quick report on last night's show at Concorde 2 in Brighton. Only about 60 people in huge dance venue (very little local advertising - I only found about the show on the site - Thanks!!). Nevertheless, Neil on good form & playing virtually the same show as in Brighton earlier this year. Joined again by Andy Roberts for Rutles medley & some others. "Godfrey Daniel" was quite outstanding & Andy's ukelele solo on "Back in 64" (prompting Neil to comment - "was it worth it?") will remain with me forever!
Come back again, Neil (but to a different venue).

Buy as many as you can! (they'll make great stocking stuffers at Christmas!!! The re-mastering of the Bonzo's is breath-taking....truly a new horizon in sound! I heard instruments that prior to this CD were buried so deeply in the mix that I hardly had known that they were there. Excellent job!!! Waiting now for volume 2. I've recently discovered your Archaeology work and find it fascinating. It has been years since I found myself playing a CD over and over again. (Have you hidden within your work some subliminal messages about chocolate?) Terrific, brilliant music.
From what I've read about you, Mr. Innes, you have a love/hate relationship with your Rutles line of music; the love we all have in expressing our skills and talents, and hate through your dealings with the Beatles' mucic conglomerate (50% of proceeds to them) as well as the dealings with Eric Idle. Has this soured you from doing similar work in the future? Fatigue from the years settling in? Or, like the last line in the last song (reversed from the previous line...I noticed), "So, so long, it's all over"?

Neil at Ronnie Scott's last night.
An evening of mirth, merriment, music and other alliterative phrases. The depth of the man's canon is indeed deep, as we were treated to the full cacophony of noise from Bonzos, Python, IBOK, Rutles and even the future LP.
Neil is a natural storyteller with the comic timing, wit and irony so lacking in today's pop performers. From poolside L.A. through the rocky river mountainside to Scottish highlands, Neil's musical tapestry wove its way around the four corners of the globe into the heart of a captive audience who had gathered in an Autumn Soho evening.
All the favourites were there: 'Urban Spaceman', 'Godfrey Daniel', 'Idiot', plus a medeley of Rutle songs. However, on this, the eve of John Lennon's 60th birthday, when Neil finished performing 'Questionnaire' the place was so quiet you could have heard a celebrity name-drop.
Do you feel better after you visit the doctor? No, you feel better after you listen to Mr Innes.

To Luke, Ed & Neil,
Hi Luke, Ed, Nick, Tom, George and Benny. It's me, your old drummer in the Lost Socks. It's been ten years, I just wanted to say hello.
Neil - I'm really sorry about my arrogant behaviour back then, and am looking forward to a copy of the new cd!

Hello Rutles-fans! This is a bit off-topic (that is to say, it doesnt concern Neil), but anyway: Has any of you ever wondered what became of the other Rutles? I have because I was very surprised to find Ricky Fataar among the "Additional Musicians" on Crowded House's "Woodface"-CD; he played drums and percussions on the songs "Weather With You", "All I Ask" and "There Goes God".

The old buck rabbit says: "Stuff it up your jumper, voh-doh-de-oh"; when hunting tigers out in Indiah, remember: they bite, they scratch, they make an awful fuss, there's no use stroking them or saying "Puss puss puss" Next door neighbor had the 2-record set with the harp-playing pup on the cover; I laughed so hard when I heard these lyrics, didn't realize at the time that "Intro and the Outro was really the Duke's "C-Jam Blues" with the entire Count Basie orchestra on triangle. Cheers, Tony

Has anyone got the recording of Neil on BBC(?) Radio in the '70's doing "Cheese And Onions" and dedicating it to John (Lennon)??? If so, please contact me on my above e-mail address. I'm also looking for any Rutles related unreleased stuff (Eric Idle performing "I Must Be In Love" recently etc.)
SUPERB website by the way!
If you read this Neil, how about an album of Rutles Rarities????????????????????

"How Sweet to be an Idiot " forever changed my way of looking at the world when I was a teen. I think Mr. Innes is a rare gem (I have also been a huge Python fan for many years as well. When I broke up with a fiancee at 25, I lost my copy of the album with "Idiot" on it, and have been missing it all these years (I am now 40 and happily married to a man with the same sensibilities). Perhaps someone will tell me where I can find a copy so the void will be filled.
Thanks, and it's great to find this website!

Neil Innes and other Bonzo's are the most incredible, fabulous musicians one could imagine ever hearing - hooray! Most people my age (18ish) have ever heard of them more's the pity, so I am rapidly spreading the word. Is there any way I could get in touch with Neil though as I've had a bash at writing my own songs and I really would be largely delighted if I could send him (e-mail or snail mail or something) copies of the lyrics. I don't know why I'm writing in this posh accent, but Neil if there's ever a rather large dinosaur in your trousers, give me a bell and I'll nip round and remove it for you, Cheers

i recently saw a special on NBC here in New York featuring Eric idle's one man show''"eric idle exploits monty python"
in the show he performs a rendition of neil's " i must be in love" does neil get royalties from eric sneakily performing this song and if Idle wants to fondly remember the pre fab four this way why the hell didnt he attend all the rutles reunions and contribute towards the new album..etc..does he need the money or someting? pity...
There was nothing sneaky about it. Eric got Neil's permission to sing the song long before his tour. Eric and Neil are not a-fussin' and a-feudin', contrary to popular mythology!

An absolutely brilliant site for the absolutely brilliant Neil Innes. A song-writing god alongside Paul Siebel and Michael Nesmith! I've followed yer career from Puddle Lane to discovering the Rutles and every mile of it has been inspiring. All the best, Neil. May the road rise up to meet you, keep you writing more of your fantastically superb songs (plus get you the Rutles copyrights back from wacko jacko!). How sweet to be a genius!

yr site is an unexpected sno-cone of love in the vast desert of disposable musical tastes... i accidentally fell in whilst cruising a "goon show" page (and downloading 'hello mabel' off of napster-true story! THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS...) it's next to impossible to find rutles or bonzos or any-innes-thing-atall around here. thanks for preserving, sharing, expanding, and enlightening. it's a true labor of love (or maybe yr both on the verge of some obsessive compulsive meltdown...) but either way, the results are the same- MORE COOL STUFF FOR ME TO ENJOY!!

Splendid, comprehensive site reflecting outstanding devotion to Neil's cause. Helpful to those of us who wanbt to catch up after a while away from the faith, too.
As others are posting their memories, I should just like to mention a sound-check cum warm-up strum before a little solo gig in Ilford[!] in the early 70s, I think, when NI was kind enough to spend a few minutes reminiscing about life in the Bonzos.
Now my 5 year-old is keeping up the tradition, happily singing her way through 'Gorilla' and 'Tadpoles' in the back of the car, nearly thirty years later and half way round the world.

Is there anybody out there who would sell me any of Neil's solo LPs/CDs, or at least a copy of any of them? Here in Germany you just can't find that kind of stuff anywhere, and even my annual visits to England haven't been successful in that area!
By the way, Borders Bookshop in Oxford Street, London has a framed picture of the cover of "New Tricks" - autographed by Neil Mr. Guitar Innes! Go and have a look!
Apart from that, great site, as so many people rightly said before me. Innespirational is the word!

great site;lots of great lyrics,too;some of them however are hard to trace back for someone who´s only got the Bonzo "outro" CD and "the Rutles-all you need is cash"; e.g. "it´s hard to make it when you´re straight":I´d like to know where this song appears, even if it´s not available;
"It's Hard To Make It When You're Straight" is a big group number sung by the whole cast at the end of an episode
of Rutland Weekend Television. It's never been on any album that we know of.

Hi there!
I first heard the Bonzos in college, and played many a track on my late night radio show. Then came the Rutles, an amiable, witty and good-hearted send-up of an amiable, witty and good-hearted band.
Over on this side of the planet, I got the impression that the Rutles also made it possible to play Beatles-esque music again, paving the way for Elvis Costello, the Squeeze and others. So, good job! Then, a couple decades later there was "Archeology," quite a wonderful and wistful album.
I'll be perched by my mailbox, waiting for the Recollections CD. New (to me) stuff will keep me honest and hold me off from silly, fannish notions like assembling make-believe bands of people I don't even know know each other ... (Neil Innes and Roy Wood and Jamie Muir and Nick Lowe ...)

I have admired Neil since the early '80s when I first saw
IBOR and The Rutles...a childhood fixation that stayed with
me and fills my imagination from time to time. I hope to be
able to see him in concert one day (does he ever visit
Scotland? With a name like Innes I suppose he must have
some connections here!) Anyway, after years of wondering
how I might, I discovered that I could (learn more about
him) through the Internet - it's what it was made for!
To Neil, fellow Bonzos and Rutles and all who have set up
the fan clubs etc. thanks for giving me an opportunity to
thank you! You've made me very happy. Toujours l'amour et
merci beaucoup.

Thank goodness that Neil Innes is in the world, his songs are things of beauty and emotion. I can't enthuse enough about the person who not only wrote the sublimely funny GODFREY DANIEL ("If all the trees were candles/And who's to say they're not?"), but also the gorgeous combination of THREE PIECE SUITE/LA VIE EN ROSE ("But did it have to take all night to kiss away each lie?"). I was privileged to hear Neil at the Bottom Line Cabaret in New York City, and hope he'll come back someday and do DRAMA ON A SATURDAY NIGHT.

I wrote a letter to Neil during my mock French O level in approx 77/78 being very depressed at having a lot of spare time in my exam becasue I was so awful at French. I will never forget that in my formative years when i was at my most depressed ,, and most happy ... it was Neil who was there for me. One can never forget one's adolescent idol.
